Wines of South Africa (WOSA) is the generic marketing body, representing all South African wine exporters. It is constituted as a not-for-profit organization and is totally independent of any producer or wholesaling company.

The WOSA mandate is to promote value growth for the South African wine industry abroad, exhibiting regularly at major wine shows as well as working closely with the tourism authorities to advance Cape wine tourism. WOSA, unlike its other counterparts, does not just believe in the business opportunity available in Nigeria but is very interested in educating Nigerian consumers and wine business operators.

As a result, WOSA introduced the special wine education course last year. This year’s wine course will be led by Wine Advisor Allister Kreft, from renowned education company, Beverage Intelligence. The course is opened to 40 participants in trade businesses, hotel food and beverage managers, retailers, portfolio managers, and other wine and food service providers. Participants will be issued a diploma certificate and conferred with an honorary Ambassadorship for Wines of SA.

The annual event is now established as a platform that delivers an up-market audience in a very prestigious environment. The grand tasting event aims to create awareness for the South African wine category in the Nigerian market; being the 12th largest importer of packaged wine from South Africa and the second biggest among African countries.

Over the last decade Nigeria has become a significant wine import market due to its expanding middle class and a gradual health-driven shift from beer to wine. Nigeria is also arguably the country with the greatest jump in wine consumption per capita between 2004 and 2008, with a jump of 1,236.2% to 0.33litres consumed on average. Growth in the alcoholic drinks market in Nigeria has generally remained strong and steady over the recent past, due to aggressive marketing activities of leading players and the good quality of most brands available. Another factor that has boosted growth is the entry of new drinks and players into the market. According to Euromonitor, increased marketing activities by manufacturers and importers of wine brands have also stimulated demand for wine in Nigeria. Events such as the Wines of South Africa Grand Tasting is a platform for buyers and suppliers to meet and discover new brands from many other South African wine producers who are looking for representation in the market and for buyers who are looking for new properties for the portfolios. This emerging wine industry is expected to increase further interest in the future. Wine is expected to post a CAGR of 6% in total volume terms over the forecast period. This growth demonstrates the increasing popularity of wine based on the current level of marketing activities, which are expected to increase and bear more fruit over time.

Wines of South Africa Grand Tasting is targeted at people in the trade such as importers, distributors and portfolio managers working in the food and beverage/hospitality industry and wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs. The B2B Marketplace, will host meetings and entertain inquiries between producers and trade business owners or their representatives. The event is also aimed at creating an experiential platform for wine enthusiasts and consumers in the Nigeria market.

Some of the finest South African wines will be on parade. WOSA will be showcasing wines from the leading family owned Wine Estates in South Africa such as Accolade Wines, Estate, Origin Wine, Blake Family Wines, Cape Classics, Noble Hills Estate, Rooiberg Winery among others. Guests are invited to ready their taste buds and have a great experience while wine producers entertain their questions, leaving them better informed about South African Wines

The event is being put together and coordinated by Spronks Creations Ltd, the organisers of the Nigeria Wine and Spirit Festival now Nigeria International Wine and Spirit Fair.
