Things to do in nairobi during a long layover

Visit the Giraffe Center in Nairobi

The giraffe center is a sanctuary that is home to endangered giraffe species. Giraffes can be fed by you from the pellets provided to you at the center. This was my first stop during my layover. It’s about 1 hour from the airport and you can spend 30 minutes-1 hour here before proceeding to the next site.

Visit David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi

The Sheldrick elephant orphanage is a shelter for orphaned elephants and rhinos. They take measures that complement the conservation, preservation, and protection of wildlife including anti-poaching, safeguarding the natural environment, enhancing community awareness, and providing veterinary assistance to animals in need.

Watch the baby elephants being fed milk from bottles, and play with them.  About an hour from the Giraffe center and entrance to the Orphanage for the visiting hour requires a minimum contribution of US$7 dollars / 500 Kenya Shillings per person. The park is only open to the public from 11am-noon.

Kenyatta Market

From the elephant orphanage, I visited the Kenyatta market which is about 30 minutes away and spent about an hour there trying out the local food. Details are highlighted in the video at the end of the post.

Visit the Nairobi national park to sightsee the range of animals available there. From buffalos, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, leopards, zebras, and more

You can also go Birdwatching in Karura Forest

if you are a bird lover, you can quickly hike and birdwatch in the scenic forest of Karura. The trip lasts between 3-6 hours with a drop-off back at the airport.
