Budget/Hostels in Mauritius

Hostels are my preferred way to travel when traveling solo because there are usually like-minded travelers there and I’m able to create a safety bubble system with other travelers.

My No 1 Safety Tip for Travel

There are some local travel insurance companies in Nigeria like AXA Mansard and Allianz Nigeria.

To avoid currency valuation issues, I prefer to use international insurance companies so as to receive a dollar value of whatever loss I incur during my travel because the local companies reimburse in Naira. I don’t think I need to say more regarding the Naira.

My current preferred option is SafetyWings

  3. Hi, thank you for this post. How much do you think is sufficient proof of funds for a one week trip?

    • Hello Fola,
My rule of thumb is $100 – $150/ day for trips, excluding activities like diving, boat trips and the like. So try doing a bit of research on the activities you may want to do, then have the extra cash for food, drinks, and random fun activities throughout the trip.

      • Where will I get Mauritius visa to travel since they don’t have office in Nigeria yet?

        • Hello, if you plan to visit for tourism, Mauritius does not require applying for visa as “Nigerians will receive a visa-on-arrival stamp upon arrival to Mauritius which allows for a maximum of 14 days’ visit.”
If you want to move to the country, I provided their contact information in the article. Call them for advice on what you need to make that a reality.

  5. Please where can I exchange naira to dollar or naira to rupees. I am low on cash with a two year. No place or way to make exchange. The one I did at the airport is exhausted

    • Did you see this “Nigerians should have Euro or Dollars on hand in order to change the currency into Mauritius Rupee at the local banks, exchange machines, the airport, hotels, or exchange shops. The local banks offer the best rates but do note that they close early”?
If the options above did not help, try going to a major international hotel, the concierge desk should be able to point you in the right direction.

  6. Do you need proof of accommodation? I didn’t see that in the list of requirements you provided. I intend to stay for around 12 days and visit a friend.

    • Hello! It’s written on the list, “ Confirmed proof of accommodation in Mauritius.”

  7. Can I apply for accommodation on line because this is my first time of traveling there?

    • If you are planning to visit for holiday, then it is best you book your hotel accommodations before getting to the country. For long term rental and the like, I do not know enought to help you with that. Call the immigration number provided in the article and seek advice from their office for legitimate information.
For holiday, see the links the provided in the article for accommodation options. Happy travels!
